Peamount United hit Athlone Town for six

Champions Peamount United thrashed Athlone Town 6-0 on Saturday afternoon in round six of the SSE Airtricity women’s national league.

If someone had only watched the first half of this game they would have went away with a glowing reference for Athlone goalkeeper Abbiegayle Royanne.

The former Galway WFC stopper pulled off a number of big saves and cleared her lines. However Sabhdh Doyle had given Peamount a half-time lead.

Doyle added a second before Tiegan Ruddy, Megan Smyth-Lynch, Áine O'Gorman and Orlagh Fitzpatrick all notched goals of their own.

Meanwhile, two goals from Aoibheann Clancy helped Wexford to a 3-1 win away to Cork City as they sit second in the table.

Tom Elmes knows that he can call on a core of experienced players who have previously won it all, but his integration of young players like Clancy and Ellen Molloy is paying off.

Clancy got things started with an early goal before Sinead Taylor doubled their lead, but the goal of the game actually went to Cork's Sarah McKevitt when she fired in from distance.

This was another disappointing result for Cork, who are without a win after six games, but Wexford deserved the three points as Clancy finished things off with her second goal.

Elsewhere, Fortune favoured DLR Waves and in particular Shauna Carroll at the UCD Bowl when the winger's cross from the left managed to bounce over the line and decide this encounter to seal a 1-0 win over Bohemians.

In the dying minutes of the first period Carroll swung the ball across and Bohs goalkeeper Niamh Coombes dropped it under pressure to give DLR a lead that they refused to give up.

The hosts probably edged this contest overall but there wasn't much between the two sides.

The performance of Nadine Clare in the middle of the pitch for Graham Kelly's team will have had the Republic of Ireland WNT scouts watching.

On Sunday Shelbourne powered past Treaty United in market’s field as Shels scored a 5-0 victory.

The attacking prowess of Shelbourne was summed up in their opening goal, Emily Whelan burned her marker before crossing low, Saoirse Noonan produced a step over as Noelle Murray supplied the finish.

When Shels hit top gear there is little that other teams in this League can do to stop them. They move the ball quickly, make intelligent supporting runs, and, crucially, finish chances when it matters.

Murray's return to the line-up in recent weeks has given them a dynamic edge, while Whelan and Jessica Ziu are playing fantastic football, much to the delight of new boss Noel King.

Treaty never really had much of a chance in this game as they struggled to keep up with The Reds, who also saw Murray convert a penalty, plus goals from Ziu, Jessie Stapleton and Whelan.
