14 man Colmcille score victory

Colmcille booked a spot in the Longford SFC knock-out stages after a 14-man victory over Mostrim.

Jack Macken’s 13th minute dismissal didn’t impact Colmcille, who made the slower start but managed to secure a narrow victory.

Mostrim had made the early running, Tiernan Hussey to the fore as the Edgeworthstown side led three points to no score early on. Colmcille fought back with points from Fergal Sheridan and Paul McKeon on 12 minutes.

Then came the red card. Macken seeing the line for a high challenge and the possibility of missing out on the quarter-final.

However, the card only seemed to spur Colmcille on. Barry McKeon (f), Sheridan and Dylan McCabe putting Colmcille five points to three ahead on 19 minutes.

Caolan Hussey produced a good save to deny Barry McKeon’s penalty after a foot block on the edge of the box.

Tirnan Hussey converted a free, but Colmcille responded with one of their own through Barry McKeon. Shane Kiernan reduced the gap to the minimum but Edgesworthtown kicked two poor wides in response.

On the stroke of half-time Colmcille landed a decisive goal. Fergal Sheridan collecting a high ball and finding the net, a telling goal in the game. Colmcille leading 1-6 to five points at half-time.

Paul McKeon opened the scoring in the second-half, but it was Mostrim who responded with effect. Ronan Courtney, Darragh Doherty(f) and Tiernan Hussey making it a two point game. 1-7 to 0-8.

That was as good as is got for Mostrim. Shea Farley and McCabe send over points to restore a four point lead on 45 minutes.

Two minutes later Sheridan was in for this second goal of the game, this time finishing off a team handing passing move, fisting the ball to the net.

Cathal Reillty’s fisted point with 10 minutes remaining didn’t see off Mostrim however, who now trailed by eight.

Free’s from Doherty and Tiernan Hussey gave the Edgeworsthtown side hope. Shane Campbell blasting to the net after Mostrim pressure maxing a three point game with six to play.

However, Colmcille showed a little more guile. Two further wides didn’t help Mostrim and Paul McKeon made them pay with a fisted point in the final minute.

Darragh Doherty managed a free in the fourth minute of injury time but it was Colmcille who prevailed 2-11 to 1-11.
