The final eight teams in the Peter Hanley Motors Longford senior football championship are now know.
Yet the actual fixture line-up is still up in the air! Victories for Abbeylara, Mullinalaghta and Colmcille confirmed the top four in group two.
At the start of play all eyes were on the meeting of Colmcille and Rathcline. As Killoe had already won the group, this fixture would decide the final line-up.
The game itself didn’t disappoint, Colmcille leading 2-5 to 1-4 at half-time. Barry McCabe’s early goal had Colmcille on their way with Shay Farrelly Colcmille goal toe poking home a rebound for Colmcille’s second goal.
Bren Peters found the net before half-time to bring Rathcline back into it as they trailed by four at half-time.
The sides were back level, five minutes into the second-half. Peters converting his second penalty of the day. However Colmcille’s fitness and experience paid off in the end as they claimed a 2-15 to 2-12, pulling away in the closing stages.
However, the result did little to confirm the quarter-final line-up. Elsewhere, Abbeylara inflicted a first defeat of the championship on Killoe. Abbeylara winning out 4-11 (23) to 2-16 (22).
Killoe had already won the group and the win wasn’t enough for Abbeylara to take fourth place, losing out on head-to-head with Rathchline.
Meanwhile Mullinalaghta St. Columba had far too much for bottom side Carrickedmond scoring a 3-16 to 10 point victory.
The results sees both Mullinalaghta and Colmcille finish on seven points. As they drew their fixture the sides are now due to meet in a play-off game. However, it’s expected both teams will come to an arrangement.
