Leona Maguire has gotten her Tokyo Olympics under way as she opened with a round of 71 to go into the club house at level par. The Cavan golfer who is competing at her 2nd games took the turn on even par as she bogeyed the fourth, but took it back on the next hole by birding the 5th. It was a similar pattern on the back 9 with a bogey on the 11th followed by a birdie on the 14th and again a bogey on the 16th with a birdie on the 17th before finishing with a par on the 18th. It leaves Leona, 5 shots of the lead held by Swedens Madelene Sagstrom who posted a 66 in sweltering conditions, with temperatures going as high as 35 degrees. Stephanie Meadow has completed her opening round strongly, with 2 birdies on her final 3 holes leaving her 1 over and in 36th place.
