After a dramatic night in the Connacht U20 championship Leitrim have kicked open the championship.
The Connacht U20 championship is played in two phases. Phase one is the round robin stage. Where, everyone plays each other once. A total of four games each.
Phase Two is the knock-out stage. The team finishing top of the pool from phase one advances to the Connacht U20 final. Whereas, teams finishing second and third meet in a semi-final. The winner advances to the final.
Leitrim’s win over Mayo has certainly opened the competition up with two rounds of fixtures remaining.
Galway top the pool with four points from three games. Whereas, Mayo are second in the pool with three points. Roscommon are in third place with four points.
However, Leitrim have two points in fourth place, behind Roscommon on score difference. While, defending champions Sligo are bottom of the pile with one point. Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim have all played one game.
With two rounds remaining, things will become a lot clearer.
Galway will round out their group stage campaign when they meet Roscommon on Wednesday night. At the same time Sligo host Leitrim. A win for Galway would see them secure a play-off spot.
A win for Roscommon would see it all come down to the final round.
Indeed, the final round on April 17, see’s Leitrim host Roscommon and Mayo host Sligo.
