Elsewhere, Westmeath gallant effort against last year’s All-Ireland runner-up Galway fell short. Galway winning out 20 points to 12 in Mullingar.

Westmeath led at half-time seven points to six. The midlander’s scores coming from John Heslin, Ronan O’Toole 0-2, Ray Connellan, Ronan Wallace, Luke Loughlin and Sean McCartan.

However, much like last week’s defeat to Armagh, Westmeath couldn’t last with their division one opponents. Stephen Smith, Heslin, Jack Smith and Loughlin adding to Westmeath’s score by 47 minutes.

Padraig Joyce’s side added nine points to their tally to collect a 20 points to 11 victory and their second group win. Galway face Armagh in the final group game, knowing they are already through to the next round.

Westmeath will face Tyrone in the final group game on June 17/18, needing a win to secure a place in the prelim-quarter-final.
