Aughawillan boosted their chances of reaching Leitrim SFC knockout stages with a 2-10 to 0-12 win away to Leitrim Gaels.
Aughawillan led for much of the contest and the visitors' ability to get goals at vital times proved decisive.
The sides traded a point each inside the opening six minutes. Morgan Quinn’s opener was cancelled out by Eunan Treacy.
Aughawillan almost found the net on eight minutes; Pearce Dolan’s effort was well saved by Gaels goalkeeper Brian Cull. Mark Plunkett pointed the resultant 45-metre kick.
Wing-back Niall Stringer made it a three-point game on 20 minutes. Two minutes later Aughawillan doubled their advantage.
Pearce Dolan connected with Sean Quinn’s dropping ball and finished to the net making it 1-4 to 0-1.
Gaels eventually settled. Four successive scores resulted in a three-point deficit on 29 minutes.
Brian Goldrick, Oisin Curley, Liam Chandler and Stephen Goldrick registered a point each for the hosts. However, Mark Plunkett replied on the stroke of half-time as Aughawillan led 1-6 to 0-5.
Liam Chandler brought it back to a three-point game 14 minutes into the second half. Three minutes later Morgan Quinn’s pointed free pushed Aughawillan five points clear.
Goldrick replied with another pointed free two minutes later. Ciaran Gilheany registered Aughawillan’s second goal on 52 minutes resulting in a seven-point game.
Gaels finished the game strongly by landing four of the last five scores. Aidan Flynn (two), Stephen Goldrick and David Regan were on target but the hosts still fell short.
