St. Mary’s Granard sit on top of Longford senior football championship group one following a 0-13 to 0-10 victory over Mostrim at Abbeylara.
It was a tight affair throughout, no more than three points separated the sides at any stage. An impressive finish saw Granard record a narrow victory,
Mostrim made a blistering start. Two points from Tiernan Hussey and one from Shane Kiernan saw the Edgeworthstown men lead 0-3 to no score inside six minutes.
Darragh Doherty and Padraig Joyce added a score each. Two pointed frees from Jamie Brady Hynes kept Granard within touching distance.
Granard waited almost 18 minutes for a score from play. Suddenly Paul Lynch’s men managed two in the space of 60 seconds making it a one-point game.
Granard followed up with two of the next three scores as the sides went in level at the break; 0-6 apiece.
Brady Hynes’ pointed free edged Granard in front for the first time within 60 seconds of the restart. His effort was quickly cancelled out by Doherty on 32 minutes.
Micheal Hynes effort from play gave Granard a two-point cushion on 41 minutes. Three minutes later, Doherty replied making it a one-point game yet again.
Granard dominated the remainder of the contest. Two points from Brady Hynes including a free along with a pointed mark Micheal Hynes helped them to a three-point victory.
The game ended on a sour note as a scuffle ensured between both camps deep into injury time.
Mostrim’s Shane Kiernan was shown a straight red card for a striking offence which rules him out of the upcoming game against Longford Slashers.

Granard's final group game is against Clonguish who were 11-19 to 0-6 winners over Ballymahon in round four.
The result's mean, Granard and Dromard have both progressed to the quarter-final stage from group one with a game remaining.
