40x20 World Collegiates
St. Coman's Fiona Tully added yet another title to her vast collection in Missuouri, USA at the weekend, the 40x20 World Collegiate championship for the third time.
Now representing NUIG after previously wearing the DCU jersey, Tully was the hot favourite having won the Irish third Level title three weeks ago in Belfast.
Easy victories over Americans Paige Taylor (MOST) and Claire Hagstrom (MNSU) led to semi-final victory over old rival Aoife Holden (DCU). Tully blitzed the Kilkenny girl, never letting her into the match winning 21-3, 21-5.
The final against Tyrone's Mairead Fox (University of Ulster) wasn't much different as Tully romped to a 21-7, 21-5 victory.
And it didn't end there, as Fiona teamed up with Inis Mor's Aisling Mullin to win the doubles title also. Having beaten Della Croce and Ava Camacho (UA) 21-13, 21-1 in the semi-final the NUIG pair had a very dominant victory in the final against DCU's Aoife Holden and Katie Barrett, winning 21-6, 21-0. This was Tully's fourth doubles title.
Pro Stop Tour
Tully warmed up for the Collegiates by taking part in the Pro Stop 48 event in Houston, Texas the week before.
This was the latest stop on the American professional circuit and Tully showcased her exceptional ability by taking on and beating two top Americans, Mikaila Esser and Aimee Tuohy before being defeated by Cork's Catriona Casey in the final.
Outside of Casey, Fiona is as good as any player in the world on current form and hopefully with even better preparation she can soon start making inroads on the Leesider's position as world no. 1.
