Joe Murray’s last-gasp penalty goal saw Leitrim defeat Longford 4-9 to 20 points at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada in the Lory Meagher cup first round.
The visitors were a point clear heading into injury time before Leitrim won the game in the most dramatic of circumstances right at the death.
Leitrim started better and led 1-3 to 0-3 on 20 minutes with James McNabola’s goal on three minutes separating the sides.
John Mulhern restored parity on 31 minutes before two pointed frees from Joe O’Brien helped Longford lead 0-9 to 1-5 at half-time.
Longford opened up a three-point gap within six minutes of the restart before Karl McDermott restored parity with a goal a minute later.
Leitrim opened up a two-point gap on 59 minutes when Brendan Delaney found the net before Paul Barden levelled the game four minutes from time.
Two minutes later Joe O’Brien gave Longford a one-point cushion before Murray won it for the hosts deep into injury time.
