Mikey Cox’ last-gasp goal saw St. Faithleach’s crowned Connacht intermediate club football champions as they defeated Naomh Anna Leitir Móir 2-14 to 2-12 at Pearse Stadium.
The sides were deadlocked at 2-9 to 1-12 at the end of normal time before Leitir Moir moved a point clear in the concluding stages only for St. Faithleach’s to snatch victory in dramatic fashion.
Diarmuid Murtagh’s goal on eight minutes helped St. Faithleach’s to a seven-point lead before three points from Dylan Seoige made it a four-point game at the first water break.
A goal from Maitias Ó’Bairéad made it a one-point game on 21 minutes and the sides traded two points each during the remainder of the half as St. Faithleach’s led 1-8 to 1-7 at half-time.
A Warren Seoige goal gave Leitir Moir a three-point lead with three minutes into the second half and the hosts held on to lead by the same margin at the second water break.
St. Faithleach’s hit three unanswered points in the final quarter including two from Diarmuid Murtagh and one from Conal Kennelly and suddenly extra time was upon us.
The Roscommon champions led 1-14 to 2-10 halfway through extra time before Leitir Moir levelled matters once more with three minutes remaining.
Myles Seoige appeared to have won it for Leitir Moir when he slotted over a point one minute into injury time only for Cox to snatch victory right at the end.
