Leitirm dramatically secured the All-Ireland U20C hurling championship with a 2-1 win on penalties.
The game with Monaghan having finished 1-17 each after extra-time and 1-14 each after normal time with the final penalty decided the game.
Leitrim had led 1-7 to 1-6 at half-time. Leitrim’s first half scores coming from Conor McLoughlin 0-5, and Dhani Keane 0-2. Dylan McDermott landing Leitrim’s goal on 27 minutes.
Monaghan opened the scoring with a goal after just two minutes through Conor McHugh. Monaghan’s other first-half scores coming through Ryan O’Rourke 0-3, Thomas Hughes and Eoghan Hoey.
Conor McLoughlin 0-3, Paddy Keane 2, Dhani Keane and Dean Early added to Leitrim’s tally in the second-half.
However, Ryan O’Rourke 0-7 6f and Jamie Murphy accounted for Monaghan’s scores as the game entered extra-time.
Pearse Kenny and Early 0-2 had Leitrim two points clear at half-time in extra-time. Points from Conor McHugh and Enda Brady sent the game to the penalties.
The penalties were just as dramatic as Leitrim’s Conor Hugh converted while James Brady shot wide. Leitrim’s Dean Early shot wide, while Monaghan’s Ryan O’Rourke saw his penalty saved.
Round three saw both Danny Kane and Cillian Goodchild shoot wide. There was further drama in round four. Monaghan keeper Goodchild saved Dillion McDermott penalty.
While Conor McHugh found the net, Moanghan’s joy was short lived as the goal was ruled out by the umpire.
Pierce Kenny scored Leitrim’s final penalty and with Tomas O’Connor putting Monaghan’s final penalty wide, Leitirm claimed the title.
