Leitrim’s Allianz League campaign has came to an end after confirmation they will not partake in the division four shield competition. Every team was guaranteed four league games, three group games and one relegation play-off/semi-final game. As Leitrim finished fourth in division four north, they were entered into a shield competition and were due to play Wexford who finished third in the three team division four south group. Croke Park this afternoon confirmed that Wexford will meet Sligo in the division four shield final and stated
following an agreement with all counties involved, Sligo will now play Wexford in the shield final on the 13th June.
Speaking after Sunday’s final league game; defeat to Antrim, manager Terry Hyland indicated Leitrim were willing to play the shield semi-final.
We’ll probably be looking for games in the next two weeks
explained Hyland, when asked about the Shield competition.
It depends where they were going to play it, I was talking to Enda and he said depending where it is ? If we happened to win today it would be in Pairc Sean, if they got a result it would be in Wexford park. In my opinion it should be played in a neutral ground
added Hyland.
We were told we had to play in a northern league and we weren’t allowed to travel and now suddenly either Wexford can travel up to Leitrim or Leitrim can travel to Wexford.
Hyland had indicated he would play the game, however the fixture not proceeding now means Leitrim will be the only county in the country who played just three league games.
It would now seem that the current management team will now to arrange a number of challenge matches ahead of the Connacht semi-final against either Mayo or Sligo on July 11.
