Longford lost out in their opening Tailteann Cup game to Limerick with goals the call of the day.
Limerick scored victory 2-16 to 1-16 with a big second-half penalty call the difference in the Gaelic Grounds.
Longford started bright but were stung by Cathal Downes fifth minute goal. The Longford defence having blocked down Downes earlier efforts.
The visitors were level five minutes later. Dylan Farrell and Oran Kenny adding to Ryan Moffet opening minute point to make it a level game.
Limerick’s goal edged them on through and led by four at half-time, 1-8 to 0-7. Longford’s points coming from Farrell 0-3 (2f) and Joe Hagan.
Three Points from Oran Kenny brought Longford back within two points.
However the game turned as Limerick were given a surprise penalty seven minutes after the restart. Brian Donovan converting from the spot. Limerick led 2-9 to 0-10.
Longford never gave-in however, Dylan Farrell, Joe Hagan and Liam Connerton keeping the Longford scoreboard ticking.
Two James Naughton points put four points between the sides as the clock moved to 70 minutes.
Brian Donovan’s restored Limerick’s four point cushion, but the game wasn’t done.
Daniel Reynolds grabbed a late goal to make it a two point game in injury time.
However, Limerick used the ball well and restored their three point advantage and saw out an opening day victory.
Longford continue their Tailteann Cup campaign next Saturday when they host Wicklow in Glennon Brothers Park.
