Longford promotion hopes came totally undone as Wexford crushed the visitors in the make or break game.
Paddy Christie’s men needed a fifth win over the campaign to secure a return to division three. However, they never showed up in Chadwick’s Wexford Park.
Wexford led three points to no score after 10 minutes. Glen Malone, Niall Hughes and Kevin O’Grady set a marker for the game.
Daniel Mimnagh opened Longford’s account on 14 minutes after Eoghan Nolan had moved Wexford four points clear. Mark Hughes fisted a point to make it a two point game. Dylan Furlong restored the hosts three point lead.
Daniel Mimnagh rattled the net to bring Longford back into the game a minute later.
Wexford responded expertly. Sean Nolan and Conor Kinsella set over points immediately. Mark Rossiter stepped up to slot home a penalty and Wexford were 1-7 to 1-2 ahead.
Niall Hughes sent over another point before Longford were rattled by another goal this one from Glen Malone. Sean Malone and Sean Nolan added a point each two minutes before half-time.
Mark Hughes converted a free for Longford who trailed 2-10 to 1-3 at half-time.
Cathal McCabe landed a Longford goal on 42 minutes to drag Longford back to life. However, Wexford were never rattled.
Points from Seán Nolan (two) and Mark Rossiter moved the yellow bellies 2-13 to 2-5 ahead. Nolan added a mark and a point.
Glen Malone and Rossister added further points to seal the 2-18 to 2-9 win. The victory turned out to be futile as Leitrim’s win over Tipperary saw them take second place on head-to-head.
