Longford scored a first championship win under Paddy Christie as they crushed Wicklow in the Tailteann cup.
Christie’s side scored a hugely impressive 3-17 to 2-9 win over Wicklow in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
Longford were excellent from the outset. Two from Oran Kenny and one from Aaron Farrell put the hosts three points to one ahead after nine minutes.
Joe Hagan buried the hosts opening goal on 12 minutes after brilliant work by Farrell. 60 seconds later and Longford had their second goal.
Keelin McGann’s quick free setup Dylan Farrell who buried the ball to the net. Oran Kenny 0-3 (1f), McGann and Peter Lynn put the hosts 2-9 to two points ahead on the half-hour.
Christie’s side dominance caused some compliancy as Wicklow corner back Eoin Murtagh stunk forward to find a goal. Dessie Reynolds and Dylan Farrell added a point each as Longford led 2-11 to 1-3 at half-time.
Oran Kenny fired over two points (one-free) after the restart as Longford picked up where they left off. Wicklow landed three points in a row before Kenny landed his third of the second-half.
Joe Hagan smashed home Longford’s third goal of the day to put the game beyond doubt on 52 minutes. Points from Dylan Farrell, Jack Macken saw the hosts 3-16 to 1-9 ahead in the final minute.
Eoin Darcy converted a late penalty for Wicklow with Keelin McGann kicking the final score of the game as Longford won out 3-17 to 2-9.
The win leaves Longford second in group three of the Tailteann Cup. Longford face Carlow in a neutral venue on the June bank holiday weekend as both sides look to progress to the second round.
