The Longford ladies footballers got off to a winning start in the TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship beating Westmeath 3-11 to 2-11 in Mullingar.
Just one point separated the sides at half time with Longford leading 2-2 to 1-4 thanks to a goal each from Sarah Shannon and Michelle Farrell.
Longford were the dominant force in the third quarter and a goal from Louise Monaghan helped them to a five point buffer at the second water break.
Westmeath responded impressively in the fourth quarter and extra time was needed after it ended 2-10 to 3-7 at the end of normal time.
Longford were the stronger outfit in extra time and finished with three points to spare.
