St. Mel’s College crowned Senior A Basketball Champions

Congratulations to St. Mel’s College who were crowned Midlands A Senior Basketball Champions last week with a 12 point victory over St. Mary’s CBS of Portlaoise in the final, winning by 55 points to 43.

They topped their pool and then beat Knockbeg College of Carlow in their semi-final by three points on the way to the final.

In the other semi-final, St. Mary’s CBS of Portlaoise required three periods of overtime to overcome Athlone’s Marist College. St. Mary’s were coached by Longford Phoenix player and Longford native Eva Gregg.

In the final against the Portlaoise College, St. Mel’s held a narrow one-point lead at the end of the third-quarter. However they overpowered their opponents by 22 points to 11 in the final-quarter to run out winners by a 12-point margin.

The victory means that St. Mel’s will have a home tie in the last sixteen of the All-Irelands in the new year. The team are coached by Longford Phoenix coaches Padraic McWeeney and Mark Canty.

Longford Inclusion Team

A very successful inclusion tournament was staged in the Mall on Saturday featuring our own inclusion team, Sligo All Stars, Mullingar Shoot Stars, and the Galway Tribes Special Olympics Basketball Club Globetrotters.

Phoenix Basketball club would like to thank Coral Leisure who generously donated the use of the hall for the day. To our club members who volunteered on the day, our referees, parents, and all other helpers on the day.

A special mention also for the support of Liam Madden and Special Olympics Longford. The club would also like to congratulate Liam on winning an award on Friday night last at the Longford Sport’s Awards night. A richly deserved accolade for Liam.

Longford Phoenix Underage

It was a weekend of mixed results for our Under-16 teams. Our White team came back from nine points down in the third-quarter to squeeze out a narrow 45-44 victory over Carrick Pumas, leaving them top of the league.

However, our Green team suffered defeat by 50 points to 32 against the Carrick Panthers.

Longford Phoenix Under-12 Boys travelled to Dromiskin in Louth to take part in an invitational tournament over the weekend.

They defeated the local Dynamites 29 points to 11 but lost their other two matches against Belfast Phoenix (31-21) and eventual winners Queens Belfast (35-15).
