Saint Mels College
Everyone at Longford Phoenix Basketball Club wishes St. Mel’s College basketball team the best of luck in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght on Wednesday (January 24th). When they compete in the All-Ireland colleges senior A league quarter-finals.
St. Mel’s qualified out of their regional League to reach the knockout stages. In the last-16, Mel’s beat former All-Ireland league and All-Ireland Cup Champions, Saint Malachy’s, Belfast by three points to reach the quarter-finals. The full draw is as follows:

Quarter-finals: 1.Crescent College Limerick v Saint Andrews Dublin at 11am. 2. Mercy Mounthawk Tralee v Rathmore Grammar School Belfast at 11am. 3. Saint Mels College Longford v Saint Fintan’s Sutton at 12-30pm. 4. Colaiste Eanna Dublin v SPSL Rathmore Kerry at 1-45pm.
Semi-Finals: Quarter-final 1 winner v Quarter-final 2 winner at 3pm. Quarter-final 3 winner v Quarter-final 4 winner at 4-15pm.
Senior Ladies
On Friday night, St. Mel’s College played host to a local derby as Phoenix took on Drumlish Dragons in in the Lonleitros League.
The teams were level at eight points each at the end of the first-quarter. Drumlish went ahead during the early stages of the second-quarter. However, Phoenix chipped away at that lead to trail by just a point at half-time.
Phoenix went into overdrive in the third-quarter outscoring the Dragons 27-points to nine, to hold a 17-point lead at three-quarter time. Phoenix went onto win 52-35.
Next up for our Ladies Seniors is an away match to Castlerea in the Hub this Friday, January 26th.
Midlands League
Our Under-18 boys recorded an excellent victory over Athlone at the weekend, winning out 99-74. However, our Under-16 girls suffered defeat against a very strong Athlone side.
Sligo Tournament
Our Under-16 boys squad travelled to Sligo for a tournament, held in the Mercy Hall against the Carrick Cougars, the Sligo All-Stars and the Galway Titans.
Phoenix won two of their three games. Beating Carrick Cougars 42-37. Then beating the Sligo All-Stars, 51-37, however losing out to a strong Galway Titans team 45-31.
