All-Ireland Schools Senior A League quarter-finals & semi-finals
St. Mel’s College epic odyssey in this year’s Senior A League came to an end at the semi-final stages in the National Basketball Arena last Thursday.
Having won their regional league, St. Mel’s took the scalp of top four rated St. Malachies of Belfast in the last-16 to qualify for the quarter-finals which were held in Tallaght.
The team led by coaches Padraic McWeeney and Mark Canty defeated St. Fintans Sutton, Dublin in the quarter-final winning by 55-33. Unfortunately another Dublin side, Coláiste Eanna proved too strong in the semi-final with the Dubliners winning by 77-52.
LLR Senior Ladies League
The Ladies team lost by nine points away to Castlerea Cavaliers in the Hub on Friday night with the Roscommon side winning by 55-46. Next up for the Ladies is a home fixture against the Sligo All-Stars this Friday in the Mall. Tipp-off is 8:30pm.
Midlands Cup
Our U-18 girls’ team had 20 points to spare over Kestrels of Portarlington on Sunday with a comprehensive 57-37 points victory in their Division Two Cup encounter played in St. Mel’s College.
There was also cup success for our Under 16 Girls team who triumphed over another Laois side beating Clonaslee by 51-26 also played in St. Mel’s.
Midlands League
Our U-16 Boys team remain top of the nine team Midlands Division One League but they were taken to the wire by bottom-of-the-table North Kildare Eagles in this encounter played in Maynooth on Sunday.
The Eagles took Phoenix into overtime before the Longford team eventually edged home by a single point to take a valuable victory on a score-line of 45-44.
The victory means that Phoenix stay top with 33-points from their nine games, with Portlaoise Panthers in second place on 21 games but they do have two games in hand.
Kildare Gliders are third with 21 points and Athlone complete the top four with 16 points.
LLR Underage Leagues
Our U-16 Girls Fire team recorded a comprehensive 50-26 win over Carrick.
