All-Ireland Club Championships

The U-16 Boys team qualified for the All-Ireland Club Championships held in Gormanstown recently. The team participated in the C grade and qualified for the Division Two quarter-finals.

In their four team Group, Phoenix were up against Belfast Star, Dundalk Ravens, and St. Mary’s Castleisland.

By a quirk of nature, Phoenix were drawn against Castleisland in the quarter-finals. Despite losing their group match to the Kerry outfit by two points. Phoenix came out on top by 10 points to book a semi-final spot against Donegal.

It was a close contest that went to the final whistle with the Donegal side edging Phoenix by 44 points to 42 to bow out of the competition.

There was a controversial start to the game as an error from the officials resulted in Phoenix scoring a basket at the wrong end! The opposition were awarded two points, despite the confusion of playing into the wrong ends.

The game should have been restarted from scratch, but incredibly the officials awarded an own basket against Phoenix and Donegal had that crucial two-point start.

Cork side Ballincollig beat Donegal Basketball Club in the final.
