Longford’s Allianz football league division three campaign got off to a losing start following a 4-9 to 1-11 loss to Limerick at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.
Limerick led 3-5 to 0-7 at half-time and held on to win by the same margin after the sides cancelled each other out in the second half.
The hosts made an explosive start and Cillian Fahy hit 1-2 inside the opening five minutes, at which point Longford were yet to register a score.
Four minutes later, Oran Kenny eventually opened Longford’s account before the visitors reduced the margin to three points on 23 minutes.
Limerick responded impressively and Brian Donovan’s two quick fire goals on 25 and 30 minutes helped Billy Lee’s men to a seven-point buffer at the break.
Longford were better in the second half, hitting four of the first six scores and Darragh Doherty’s goal one minute into injury time made it a two-point game.
Limerick subsequently hit 1-2 without reply as James Naughton’s goal five minutes into injury time sealed a comfortable victory for the hosts
