Longford Town picked up an excellent away point with a 2-2 draw in the RSC against promotion chasing Waterford.
Town put a four game losing streak behind them last week and twice came from behind to claim a draw against Waterford.
Stephen Henderson’s side battled back from the early concession to claim a draw with Waterford finishing with 10 men.
Waterford took the lead with six minutes on the clock. Shane Griffin cut Longford open with a through ball to Roland Idowu.
Idowu powered the ball past Jack Brady for the opening goal.
Longford came close to equalising on 10 minutes, Aaron Walsh’s header rattling the crossbar.
However, Town to level the game eight minutes later. Gary Armstrong with a volley to the net.
Waterford restored their advantage three minutes later from the penalty spot. Shane Elworthy adjudged to have fouled Ryan Burke. Ronan Coughlan converting the spot-kick.
Waterford took that lead into half-time but had chances to increase it. A Barry Baggley free-kick rattled the Longford cross bar on 33 minutes.
Jack Brady produced a brilliant save to deny Baggley a minute into first-half injury time.
The game swung in Longford’s favour five minutes after the restart. Waterford’s Giles Phillips was shown a straight red card having brought down O’Brien-Whitmarsh.
Beineon O’Brien-Whitmarsh converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-2.
Town came close to taking the lead on 63 minutes. Shane Elworthy’s strike found the side netting.
Waterford should have scored 12 minutes from time, Serge Atakayi found Conor Parsons, but Parsons could only fire over the bar.
A very good point for Longford Town against the team in second place in the first division table.
