Longford Town slipped to the basement of the SSE Airticity premier division after Waterford secured a 1-0 victory in the RSC.
Town have now lost four of their last five matches as they sit in ninth position in the league table after seven games as Kevin Sheedy’s side recorded their first home win of the campaign.
Waterford took the lead with the first chance of the game.
Just nine minutes were on the clock when Prince Mutswunguma robbed the ball from a Joe Gorman mistake and slipped the ball past the advancing Michael Kelly.
Town came close twice before half-time for an equaliser, Rob Manley’s attempted 16th minute chip was well stopped by Waterford keeper Paul Martin.
10 minutes later Manley roses expertly but sent his header over the bar.
Mutswuguma nearly made it 2-0 bang on half-time as he raced through on goal, but fizzed his shot wide of the post.
16 minutes into the second-half and Waterford were reduced to 10 men, Kyle Ferguson receiving his marching orders for what appeared to be use of the elbow.
A minute later Town had the ball in the net but Joe Gorman’s header was ruled out for offside.
Substitute Sam Verdon came close to an equaliser eight minutes from the end, but saw his shot cleared off the line by Cameron Evans.
The result see’s Waterford leap frog Town in the table who have scored just once in their last five games.
