Goals from Jordan Adeyemo and Shane Elworthy ensured Longford town finish eighth in the SSE Airtricity first division writes Tony Ghee.
The hosts were by far the better team in the first-half, creating three really good chances and converting one.
Jordan Adeyemo should really have put the Town ahead after three minutes. However, when put clean through by Shane Elworthy, the Town striker shot straight at advancing Ramblers keeper Darragh Burke.
Just before the half-hour, Adeyemo head home Elworthy’s perfectly weighted right-wing cross to the bottom corner of the net.
Adeyemo came close to adding a second in the first minute of stoppage time. However, he headed just over the Cobh bar from Dean O’Shea’s pin-point cross.
It took 22 minutes for the first chance of the second-half to arrive. Adeyemo shooting a 22-yard effort just narrowly wide.
The visitors did not have their first decent effort until the 84th minute. Dale Holland intercepted a Town clearance feeding Dean Larkin on the halfway line
Larkin whipped in a diagonal ball into the Longford box which Brendan Frahill head down to substitute Tiernan O’Brien. O’Brien could only hook his shot went well wide.
Longford sealed the three points, when substitute Adam Wixted’s excellent low ball into the box from was fired to the roof of the net from 16-yards by Elworthy.
Wayne Groves charges finish their campaign next week with a trip to Belfield to face second placed UCD. However, it will remain Longford’s worst season since 1997-98.
