Longford Town recorded their first win of the season on bank holiday Monday beating Kerry 2-1 in Bishopsgate.
First-half goals from Fran Campbell and Luke Wader gave Longford their first victory of the season in their 13th match.
Kerry pulled one back with 19 minutes to play. However, Longford hung on for a first three points of 2024.
Longford opened the scoring on 22 minutes. Conor Crowley’s corner found Slade Water at the back post. Water’s header across the face of the goal, saw Fran Campbell head the ball to the back of the Kerry net.
Four minutes later, the Town doubled their advantage. Another Crowley corner was headed home by Slade Water’s diving header.
Town came close to making it 3-0 through Ross Fay and Dean O’Shea, both missing the target when they should have done better.
Jordan Adeyemo spurned two second-half chances to make it three and that came close to costing Longford.
Kerry substitutes Okwuy Okwute and Ryan Kelliher combined to bring the Munster side back into the contest on 70 minutes.
Okwute right wing cross was superbly brought under control by Kelliher. The striker delivered a stunning overhead kick that flew past Town keeper Jack Brady into the top corner of the net.
Kerry were nearly level seven minutes from time. McGrath was put through on goal but his strike was superbly blocked by Town centre-back O’Shea.
