Mayo hold off Roscommon rally for victory

Mayo book place in All-Ireland championship knockout stage

Mayo produced another strong second-half to score a third victory of the season over Roscommon.

The game was alive until the closing stages when a flurry of green flags saw Mayo to a two point victory.

Roscommon got off to a flying start, Donie Smith kicked the opening score inside 60 seconds. Darren McHale brought Mayo level two minutes later.

Matthew Ruane and Diarmuid Murtagh subsequently traded points. Further scores from Conor Cox and Robbie Dolan saw Roscommon lead 0-4 to 0-2 on seven minutes.

Mayo’s Eoghan McLaughlin made it a one-point game on 11 minutes. Six minutes later Ryan O’Donoghue levelled the game.

Roscommon moved a point clear on two further occasions, each time the visitors drew level.

O’Donoghue gave Mayo a one-point lead on 29 minutes, two minutes later Conor Cox replied for the Rossies.

Roscommon survived a scare three minutes from the break as Darren McHale missed a goal scoring opportunity.

The Mayo wing-forward hit the crossbar from a score-able distance although Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll narrowed the angle well. It remained 0-8 apiece at half-time.

Cillian O'Connor opened the second-half scoring after two minutes. Diarmuid Murtagh levelled the game eight minutes later. Darren McHale restored Mayo’s lead three minutes later.

Mayo produced a quick counter attack, Ryan O’Donoghue made it a two point game. However, Roscommon were well in the game, Conor Carroll converted a 45 to make it a one point game.

However the game swung in Mayo’s favour as Jordan Flynn made it a two game. Roscommon had a shout of the penalty but it was at the other end where O’Donoghue was fouled on the hour mark.

O’Donoghue stepped up to convert from the spot.

Roscommon didn’t give in though. Two Conor Cox frees made it a four point game with eight minutes remaining. McLaughlin and Keith Doyle exchanged scores as the clocked ticked down.

The game seemed to be beyond Roscommon when Donnacha McHugh fisted a ball to the net with two minutes remaining.

However, in the next attack Dylan Ruane was fouled in the square. Conor Cox stepped up to convert the penalty. Mayo responded strongly with a Tommy Conroy point.

Roscommon added scores through late Donie Smith points and through Ultan Harney but it wasn’t enough as Mayo won out 2-14 to 1-15.
