Roscommon's chances of progression in Division 2 of the National Hurling league are left in tatters following an 11 point defeat to Mayo at Dr. Hyde Park.
The hosts made a solid start to both halves but Mayo were much the better side overall and they led 0-11 to 0-5 at half-time.
The opening quarter was evenly contested with Mayo and Roscommon tied at three points apiece heading into the first water break.
Cathal Dolan registered two points for the Rossies while Adam Finnerty was also on target.
Dolan was very accurate from placed balls and after the resumption he levelled the contest yet again at five points each.
Mayo started to dominate after that and the visitors hit six points without reply before half-time.
Johnny Keane’s men began the second half with urgency and Jack Lohan halved the deficit by finding the net soon after the restart.
Roscommon were subsequently awarded a penalty only for Dolan to shoot wide and the gap remained at three points.
Five minutes later Mayo responded in style as Keith Higgins scored a goal stretching the gap to nine points at the second water break with Mayo leading 1-16 to 1-7.
Mayo was now in a commanding position and they kept the scoreboard ticking over in the final quarter as they finished with 11 points to spare.
