Mullinalaghta maintained their perfect start to the Longford senior football championship with a 1-11 to 1-10 victory over Abbeylara last weekend.
The six-time champions prevailed by the smallest of margins but their manager Ollie Fay says the victory was hard-earned.
“Abbeylara, to be fair were set up very defensively, our lads were swinging the ball over and back. Maybe swinging it out a bit too far from the scorable area,” said Fay.
“It was a strong wind in the first half, we just tried to keep the scoreboard ticking over
“In the second half, we said maybe push on a bit more with the wind. We did push on a bit more but kept them in the game towards the end there with that last goal.
“We’re very happy we got over the line, it’s always tight games against Abbeylara.”
That’s now two wins from two for Mullinalaghta. Fay’s men have been earmarked as one of the two favourites to win the Connolly Cup along with Killoe.
The form book gives credence to that argument. They’re the only sides with two wins from their opening games.
Fay says his not interested in hearing that narrative however
“I’m not going to cliché it here but were just taking every single game at a time,” he said.
Next up for Mullinalaghta is a rematch of last year’s county final with Colmcille providing the opposition.
Colmcille claimed victory by virtue of a last-gasp penalty goal last year and Fay is expecting another tough battle.
“We’ve the senior champions next so that’s going to be a struggle again. We just have to work and improve every week. We’ll take every game as it comes.”
