Mullinalaghta reached the Longford senior football championship semi-finals following a 0-15 to 2-8 victory over Abbeylara at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
Ciaran Fox’s men were two points down with five minutes remaining but showed the resilience of true champions to win by the smallest of margins.
Robbie Smith’s penalty goal saw Abbeylara led 1-2 to 0-3 on 15 minutes and while Mullinalaghta landed two of the next three scores, Abbeylara still led 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.
Mullinalaghta led by a point on 52 minutes but three minutes later, PJ Masterson restored Abbeylara’s two-point cushion when he found the net.
Mullinalaghta restored parity three minutes from time thanks to points from David McGivney and Cian Mackey.
James McGivney and Rian Brady added a point each as Mullinalaghta moved two points clear in injury time. Nigel Rabbitte replied with a point for Abbeylara but they still fell short in the end.
