Shannonside Sport has learnt that the Roscommon and district league will not be part of the new FAI National League.
Shannonside Sport has learnt that the Roscommon and district league is not one of the 67 interested parties. Also, Shannonside Sport believes that no club from Roscommon has expressed an interest in joining the new league.
New league set to begin in August 2026
The FAI were originally looking for 20 clubs or entities to join the new league. The league would then be split into a north and south divisions. Promotion and relegation to the League of Ireland first division would be part of the new league.
The Irish independent reported that interest from Connacht and Ulster was small. However, Mayo FC and former league of Ireland member Salthill Devon have revealed they are included in the interested 67.
However, Roscommon look set to remain as one of the few counties without a league of Ireland senior or underage representative. There are currently nine counties without representation in the league of Ireland. These are Cavan, Monaghan, Meath, Laois, Tipperary, Offaly, Leitrim, Roscommon and Clare.
However, Shannonside Sport understands clubs and entities from Monaghan, Meath, Tipperary and Offaly have expressed an interest in joining the new league.
Launching the new league; FAI director of football Marc Canham said; “The new FAI National League provides a clear pathway and progression from the Amateur game to the League of Ireland and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop our Irish football pyramid now and in the future."
The FAI will now work with the clubs who expressed interest in joining the new league. The FAI are yet to announce the next milstone in the project.
