A dominant second-half display saw Leitrim open their Allianz football league division four campaign with a 3-18 to 0-11 win over Waterford at Carrick-on-Shannon writes Jack Gannon .
Waterford’s Conor Murray registered the game’s opening score on two minutes before three points in a row from Keith Beirne gave Leitrim a two-point lead six minutes later.
Michael Curry halved Leitrim's lead with a well taken score before the hosts replied with two points in as many minutes from Beirne and Aidan Fylnn.
Waterford subsequently enjoyed their best period of the game landing six points without reply to lead by three points 33 minutes.
Leitrim’s Darragh Rooney replied with two points before halftime to reduce the deficit to just one point; Leitrim trailing seven points to eight.
Rooney picked up where he left off in the second half and levelled the game 60 seconds after the restart.
Leitrim followed up with five successive points without reply, four coming from the boot of Beirne while Pearce Dolan got on the scoresheet too.
Wateford’s Dermot Ryan broke Leitrim’s momentum as he replied with a point on 46 minutes before Andy Moran’s men responded in emphatic fashion.
The hosts bagged two goals in a row from Jack Heslin and Tom Prior to put the game out of reach for Waterford. Leitrim now led 2-13 to 0-9 nine minutes from time.
Paul Keaney pushed Leitrim 14 points clear six minutes into injury time before Beirne rounded off a great individual display with a goal of his own right at the death as Leitrim ran out comfortable winners.
