Longford Town will look to make it 18 games unbeaten against Athlone Town in Saturday night’s El Classico.
Cronin’s Town are starting show promise. Three games unbeaten but their squad will be tested in the coming weeks as back fixtures catch up.
Saturday night’s game is a different proposition for Town. The local derby can throw up surprises but Athlone aren’t the side they were some 10 years hence the long Longford run.
The club’s decision to go amateur as part of a long term strategy looks positive for the overall health and development of the club.
However the short to medium term will see a disjointed Athlone Town on the senior pitch.
That being said, Athlone are no mugs and are certainly not pushovers. One point from seven games, but they have found the net eight times.
Cronin’s side are starting to develop into a first division challenger. Points on the board is needed at this stage and this is a game that Longford need to win.
This should be a home win, but anything goes in a derby game. Aaron McCabe and Christian Magnusson are both out for Longford.
