Here’s a look at the second round of fixtures in the Leitrim SFC starting with the games taking place on Friday.
Friday August 11th - Mohill v Fenagh St. Caillins
Throw in: 7.30pm
Fenagh St Caillins find themselves under pressure here. A second-half capitulation resulted in a narrow defeat to Leitrim Gaels in round one and avoiding defeat here is imperative.
Mohill are not the kind of opposition you want to be facing under such circumstances.
That said, Keith Beirne accounted for 14 of Mohill’s 18 points during the win over Dromahair.
Successful curtailment of his dominance could result in victory. Otherwise, a second straight defeat is a possibility for Fenagh.
Aughnasheelin v Gortletteragh
Throw in: 7.30pm
A clash of the bottom two sides in the competition as things stand.
It’s a draw that both sides would have settled for, especially considering the alternatives. A win here will be massive for either side.
Gortletteragh only managed two points from play during the opening round defeat to St. Mary’s Kiltoghert. Don’t expect a repeat performance here, however.
Aughnasheelin shipped four goals against Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins last week. Failure to address their defensive frailties could prove detrimental once again.
Saturday August 11th - Leitrim Gaels v Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins
Throw in: 7pm
Potentially the game of the weekend with both sides victorious in round one.
Leitrim Gaels will have a spring in their step. Seven points down against Fenagh St. Caillins ten minutes into the second half, yet Paul Prior’s men still scored a one-point victory.
Meanwhile, Ballinamore defeated Aughnasheelin 4-11 to 0-4. Notwithstanding the calibre of opposition, 4-11 is a phenomenal tally. Especially when spread across nine different players.
Gaels have home advantage and will need it against a strong Ballinamore side.
The 2021 champions were almost back to full strength against Aughnasheelin; they could yet be in this championship for the long haul.
Glencar Manorhamilton v St Patrick’s Dromahair
Throw in: 7pm
Expect an interesting battle here as neighbouring clubs go head-to-head.
Glencar Manorhamilton were forced to settle for a draw with Aughawillan in round one. Missed chances proving their undoing in the end.
Improved shooting efficiency should point towards victory for Glencar Manorhamilton, but it could go down to the wire.
St. Mary’s Kiltoghert v Aughawillan
Throw in: 7pm
St. Mary’s Kiltoghert have certainly had the measure of Aughawillan in recent years.
The defending champions tasting victory in each of their last two quarter-final meetings.
Ten points separated the sides last year. While that was 11 months ago, St. Mary’s are still a formidable opponent and should claim victory again here.
