The first round of the prestigious FAI junior cup competition took centre stage on Sunday.
While some of the league sides got a bye into the next round. None the less it was a day of mixed fortunes for the local sides.
Roscommon and district league premier division side St. Johns Athletic beat Mayo Premier side Straid and Foxfort United 3–1 at the Mayo venue.
Jamie Tiernan opened the scoring for St. John’s with just 10 minutes played and Cian Kelly added a second nine minutes later.
Tiernan struck his fourth of the season on 27 minutes, while Paul Moran pulled one back for the hosts.
Moore United played the Sligo/Leitrim super league side Carbury FC at Moore. However, it was not their lucky day, losing 4–2 following a penalty shootout.
Overall, it was a really thrilling game between two evenly matched sides. Charles Nevin converted a penalty for Moore United but the visitors equalised with 10 minutes remaining.
With no scores in extra-time the game went to a penalty shootout, where Carbury won on out 4–2.
Castlerea Celtic advanced to the second round following a hard earned 2 - 1 win over Dunmore Town at Dunmore. A fine Jack Higgins header from a Jay Mc Cartney cross gave the winners a 1 - 0 half time. They survived constant pressure in the second half before adding a second. Ronan Curran created an opening and Jay Mc Cartney scored.
Premier side CP Ajax lost 3–0 away to the Sligo/Leitrim super league side Strand Celtic. The Castleplunket side played reasonably well and while 1–0 down at half-time their young side looked like they could get an equaliser. However, they conceded two more goals in the closing stages.
Roscommon & District League round-up
Ballinasloe Town conceded their game away to Iorras Aontaithe FC as did Rahara Rovers away to Cartron United.
In the Premier Division of the Roscommon and District League Boyle Celtic made it two wins from two when they beat Shiven Rovers 6–2 at Newbridge.
The sides were level, 2–2 at the break but in the second-half Boyle Celtic were in control.
Conor French and Darragh Murphy scored for Shiven. Whereas, Shane Carroll and Daniel Hughes replied for Boyle, all in the first-half.
Jake McCrann, Issac Shane Battles and Shane Carroll added four more for Boyle Celtic after the break.
Cloonfad United picked up all three points a home to a good Moylough side. Matthew Fraine scored for Cloonfad United on 52 minutes.
Moylough were really good in the second-half, but Dylan Connolly was outstanding in the Cloonfad defence. Moylough missed a great chance to level the game in the closing stages, but Cloonfad held out to win.
Skyvalley Rovers had a comfortable win over newly promoted St. Cuans/Ahascragh United at Onagh Park Taughmaconnell.
The visitors, are concentrating on giving their local young players experience were in contention until half-time but fell away in the second-half.
David Grehan, Padraig Corbett and Keelan Galvin scored for the winners in the first-half with Matheus Belehha pulling one back for Cuans/Ahascragh before half-time.
Eoin Keogh added two more after the break and Garry Canavan Musa, John Frehill and David Grehan added one each before the end.
Division two results
In Division 2, Kilkerrin United made it two wins from two, beating Moore United 4–0 at Moore. Declan Murphy gave Kilkerrin United a 1–0 half-time lead.
Brian McDermott added a second 10 minutes into the second-half before two cracking goals from Martin Fahy and Daniel Stephens secured all three points for Kilkerrin.
The Cam Celtic/Dysart Roscommon United game was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Seamus Comisky. Comisky was the first secretary of the Roscommon and District League, may he rest in peace.
In the only game played in the Women’s League, Kilkerrin United beat Shiven Rovers 2–1 at Newbridge.
Ciara Crehan gave Shiven a 1–0 lead. Samantha Fahy equalised with a 17th minute free-kick. Mairead McGann got the winner after 70 minutes.
