Roscommon and district league round-up

All five Roscommon and district league teams progressed to the FAI Junior Cup third round.

In an all premier division game played at Lecarrow, St. Johns Athletic advanced to the next round at the expense of Castlerea Celtic.

This was a thrilling game between two sides who were undefeated this season. Simon Leonard, Cian Kelly and Jamie Tiernan had St. Johns 3-0 up on 35 minutes.

Castlerea Celtic had a player sent-off before half-time.  However, they were a completely different side after the break, pulling two goals back through a Jay McCartney penalty and A Pedro Jailes strike with 20 minutes remaining

With eight minutes remaining, Alan Duffy made it 4-3 for St. John’s. Indeed, Castlerea missed a penalty with St. Johns through to round three.

Cloonfad United had an excellent 7-2 win over Sligo side Mervill United at Cloonfad. Conor Flynn scored two in the first 20 minutes. James Brennan added two and Darragh Flynn one to give Cloonfad a 5-0 half-time lead.

Dean Coyle and Jack Sullivan added two more in the second-half. The Sligo side grabbing two late goals.

Whereas, Premier side Boyle Celtic were comfortable 6-2 winners over Division 1 side Skyvalley Rovers at Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell.

After six minutes a ball into the Skyvalley area wasn't dealt with, Mike Corrigans shot was deflected giving the keeper no chance.

On 20 minutes a quick break down the right and cross found David Flanagan who finished to make it 2-0.

Both teams traded half chances before a Gary Canavan free was finished to the net by a John Feehily header.

Only a few minutes later Boyle had a free-kick which was half cleared. Boyle put the ball back in the area and Cathal McKeown finished from close range.

On 40 minutes a Gary Canavan cross was met by Danny Lynch who setup John Feehily to finish from six-yards.

Just on half-time, Boyle broke from the back, a good diagonal ball was controlled and finished by Shane Carroll to make it 4-2 at half-time.

Seven minutes after the restart, Boyle made it five. A fast break ended with Mike Corrigan finishing from 15-yards. Davy Duggan made it 6 – 2 on 70 minutes as Boyle progressed.

Premier division

Moore United are top of the Premier Division points table following a 2-1 win over C P Ajax at Tarmon.

James Byrne played it through to Moore’s Andy Nevin who volleyed to the roof of the net.

Within five minutes, Charles Nevin broke clear of the home defence and was taken down. Nevin converted the penalty kick. Charlie Ward pulled a goal back for The Castleplunket side early in the second-half as Moore won out.

In Division 2, Kilkerrin United are top of the table following a hard earned 2-1 win over Cam Celtic/Dysart St. Kilkerrin.

Decan Murphy gave Lilkerrin a 1-0 lead after just two minutes. Andy Higgins levelled the game before half-time.

A great header from Daniel Stephens gave Kilkerrin a 2-1 lead early in the second-half and they somehow held out to take all three points.

Rahara Rovers welcomed Roscommon United on Sunday morning and despite a late comeback, Rahara came out on top of a 5:2 score-line.

Niall Hynes opened the scoring when he finished from close range from a Shane McCormack corner.

McCormack added a second and third, both from the penalty spot. While, Cormac Lavin finished well from a great move involving Paul Flaherty and Darren Gately to make it 4-0 at half-time.

Micheál Hussey slotted home calmly when one on one with the Roscommon keeper after an hour to make it five.

However, a late comeback from the town team with two late goals. Marcel Gala and KC Domican in the 85th and 92nd minutes.

Indeed, a late diving save from Liam Naughton in the Rahara goals stopped a third as Rahara won out 5-2.

St. Johns Athletic beat Moore United 6-1 in their Division two game at Falty. Camin Boland scored three and M J O’Connor, Chris Hurley and Conor Murphy one each for St. John’s. Seamus Murray replying for Moore.

In the Women’s league a Caoimhe strike for Ballaghaderreen gave them a 1-0 win away to Boyle Celtic.

Nadine Cawley scored the only goal for Ballinasloe Town after three minutes to secure the points from their home game against Shiven Rovers.
