The Joes Bar Sponsored Challenge Cup took centre stage with round two game being played in Roscommon.
In the derby game at Taughmaconnell, Skyvalley Rovers are through to the next round following a 1–0 win over Premier title contenders Moore United.
This was a typical local derby with few clear chances created by either side. The hosts had appeals for a penalty in the first-half turned down and were hoping this would not come back to haunt them by.
Skyvalley Rovers finally broke the deadlock 27 minutes into the second-half. A long delivery into the Moore penalty area deceived the Moore keeper and Mark Richardson had an easily converted.
A great defensive display by the home defence saw them hang on for victory.
Premier side Boyle Celtic advanced to the next round at the expense of Cloonfad United second side.
The visitors battled well in the first-half and were level at the break. However, Jake McCrann finally made the breakthrough early in the second-half. From then on there was only going to be one result.
Daniel Hughes, Michael Corrigan, Adam Dwyer, Shane Carroll and Ronan Gavin added five more before Jake McCrann scored his second as the game finishing 7–0.
Division 1 side Glen Celtic beat Premier side Shiven Rovers 2 –1 at Newbridge.
This was a real battle with little between the teams. The game was scoreless at the break.
The Glenamaddy side took the lead early in the second-half. Dylan Joyce was taken down in the penalty area and Michael Heneghan converted the resultant spot kick.
With 68 minutes on the clock Shiven Rovers were level thanks to a goal from Darragh Murphy. Just when extra-time seemed likely Gavin Hegarty scored the winner for the Glen side with nearly the last kick of the game.
All premier division meeting at Ballaghaderreen
In an all Premier Division Clash at Ballaghaderreen, the hosts, who were struggling for most of the season, knocked Castlerea Celtic out of the Cup.
The game was a real thriller with six goals after extra-time and a penalty shootout. There was a sending-off before Ballaghaderreen won 5–4 after the penalty shootout.
Ronan Curran converted a penalty to give Castlerea a 1–0 lead after 10 minutes. Cathal Horan equalised for the host’s side just before half-time.
Oisin Farrell scored an absolute stunning volley for Castlerea Celtic early in the second-half and Dominic Bligh made it 3–1 for Castlerea Celtic ten minutes later.
Ian Frain pulled a goal back for Ballaghaderreen, who had a player sent-off for a second yellow card with 15 minutes remaining.
Just when Castlerea seemed to have won the game, Cathal Horan poked home an equaliser with only two minutes remaining. There were no more scores in extra-time with Ballaghaderreen winning the penalty shootout 5–4.
Cup Holders C.P Ajax were beaten 2-1 away to a good Division 1 Moylough side. James Foley gave Moylough the lead after three minutes. However, Charlie Stokes replied for a young Castleplunket side just before half-time.
Moylough won a penalty with 15 minutes remaining when Dermott Hughes was taken down in the box. Hughes picked himself up and converted the resultant spot kick.
Two St. Johns Athletic Teams
St. Johns Athletic have two teams in the Round three draw following wins over Cloonfad United and Ballymoe FC. Their first team beat Cloonfad United 2–0 at Cloonfad.
The hosts had a great chance to take the lead before half-time but missed and it was to prove costly. Simon Leonard gave St. Johns the lead on 60 minutes and he added a second three minutes later.
St. Johns second side caused the shock of the day when they beat Premier side Ballymoe FC 9–1 at Lecarrow.
The hosts took an early lead but Damien Goggins had the side’s level on 20 minutes. However, it was all downhill after that for a Ballymoe side who seemed to have no interest in winning.
Camin Boland, Brendan Burke and Conor Murphy scored two each and Danny O’Brien, Chris Hurley and Ryan Dowling added one each for a St. Johns side that should not be under estimated.
Division one side Dunmore Town are safely through to the next round following a 6–2 win over Division two side Roscommon United at Dunmore.
Shane McGrath gave Dunmore the perfect start when he scored in the first minute.
The visitors levelled the game a few minutes later. Raman Saman scored two and Padraig Costello and Ben Glynn added one each with Shane McGrath completing the scoring for Dunmore Town.
In the Roscommon & District Women’s League, Kilkerrin United beat Shiven Rovers 5–2 at Kilkerrin. Mya Grogan scored twice, with Ellie McDermott, Kate McGann and Karla Cassidy added one each for Kilkerrin. Rachel Farrell and Laura Leahy replying for Shiven.
Castlerea Celtic beat Ballinasloe Town 3–0 at Castlerea. Megan Flanagan scored two and Clodagh Diggins one for Castlerea. Dunmore Drew 0–0 against Ballaghaderreen in a good game of football played at Dunmore.
