The quarter-finals of the Joes Bar sponsored Challenge Cup were played over the weekend.
Three teams from Division 1 will join premier side St. Johns Athletic in the draw for the semi-finals.
Division 1 side Dunmore Town advanced to the semis at the expense of premier division side Ballaghaderreen at Dunmore.
Ballaghaderreen came very close to opening the scoring with only three minutes played. However, the ball came back off the goal post.
On 12 minutes, Dunmore took the lead when Shane McGrath headed a corner kick to the visitor’s net. Eight minutes later, Padraig Costello chipped the Ballaghaderreen keeper from long range. Dunmore led 2-0 at half-time.
Thomas Gleeson added a third on 54 minutes as the game as a contest seemed over.
However, in the closing minutes the host’s side had two players sent-off for dissent. Cathal Horan and Eoghan Duffy scored two for Ballaghaderreen to give the Dunmore side a nervous end to the game.
In an all-Premier Division clash at Lecarrow, St. Johns Athletic came from behind to edge out Boyle Celtic in a five goal thriller. Boyle Celic took the lead through the talented Adam Dwyer with just four minutes played.
Cian Kelly had the side’s level 19 minutes later. Michael Corrigan restored the Boyle lead on the hour but Jamie Tiernan levelled the game eleven minutes later.
Eamon Harney scored what turned out to be the winner for St. Johns Athletic on 75 minutes. St. John’s as the only Premier side left in the competition will now be clear favourites to win the Cup.
In an all Division 1 clash at Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell, Skyvalley Rovers and Moylough 79 went all the way to extra-time. The hosts edged into the semi-finals on a 4–3.
Extra-time needed for Skyvally and Moylough
After nine minutes, Mark Richardson scored a fine goal from a tight angle to give the hosts an early lead.
Tommy Shaughnessy made a fine save to prevent a second. However, Moylough were on top for the remainder of the half.
Joseph Whyte equalised and Dermott Hughes converted a penalty to give Moylough a 2-1 lead at half-time.
The hosts were better in the second-half and finally levelled the game when John Fehily got on the end of a Danny Lynch cross to equalise.
In the first period of extra-time David Grehan headed a Mark Richardson corner to the net.
Danny Lynch added a fourth for Skyvalley in the second period of extra-time and Leo Donnellan scored an excellent goal to keep his sides hope. However it was Skyvalley who progressed.
The Glenamaddy side Glen Celtic continued their good run of form, seeing off Division 2 side St. Johns “B” at Glenamaddy.
The visitors had a big win in the previous round but could not overcome a good Division 1 side on their home ground. Ethan Dowd scored with a brilliant 30-meter volley but shortly afterwards conceded a penalty.
Ross Hegarty pulled off a splendid save to keep his side in front. On 35 minutes, Gavin Hegarty forced a good stop from the visitor’s keeper but Jarlath O’Neill followed up to make it 2–0 for the Glenamaddy side.
Both teams had chances but Glen Celtic held on to the two goal lead to make the semi-finals.
Cloonfad United, Ballinasloe Town, Cam Celtic/Dysart and Moore “B” are through to the semi-finals of the David Kelly Shield following wins in their Quarter-Final games over the weekend.
David Kelly Shield semi-finals line-up revealed
Division 1 side Cloonfad United beat Division 2 side Kilkerrin United 1–0 at Kilkerrin. Darragh Flynn scored the only goal of the game after eleven minutes.
Division 1 side Ballinasloe Town were pushed all the way before overcoming a young St Cuans/ Ahascragh United side.
Cameron O’Leary converted two penalties, one in the last minute of the game for Ballinasloe with Liam O’Connor replying for the Cuans/Ahascragh.
Moore United second side beat Roscommon United 3–2 at Moore but the outcome was tarnished by a leg injury to young Aaron Hogan.
Malcolm O’Hanlon Oisin Kelly and Jason Cunningham scored for Moore, with Korey Keadin and Marcel Galy replying for United.
Cam Celtic/Dysart beat Cloonfad United’s second side 3–1 at Dysart. Ben Moran and two from Gareth Mulligan saw Cam/Dysart into semi-finals with Jason Reinhardt replying for Cloonfad.
In the Women’s League Dunmore Town beat Kilkerrin United 2–0 at Kilkerrin. Nicola Kilgarriff scored both goals for the winners.
Ballaghaderreen beat Castlerea Celtic 3–1 at Ballaghaderreen. The hosts went in front after 26 minutes through Caoimhe Feeney but Castlerea Celtic were level on the hour.
Both teams had chances but in the last seven minutes Caoimhe Feeney and Rebecca Finan struck twice for Ballaghaderreen.
