Roscommon and District League Round-up

The third round of the FAI Junior Cup took centre stage on Sunday. Overall it was a poor day for the Roscommon and district league teams.

Premier side St Johns Athletic took on the Sligo super league side Strand Celtic at Lecarrow, eventually lossing out 3-0. Somewhat against the run of play the Sligo side were 1–0 ahead after 30-minutes, adding two more after the break.

Ballinasloe Town hosted old rivals Castlebar Celtic at Ballinasloe. The Talented Castlebar Celtic side who went through to Round four after a 2–0 win on Sunday.

The hosts missed a good chance after six minutes of play. The winners scored their first by way of a deflection midway through the first-half and added a second with less than a minute played in the second-half.

In the Premier Division of the Roscommon and district league just one point separated the top four of Castlerea Celtic, Boyle Celtic, St Johns Athletic and C P Ajax.

C P Ajax had an impressive 2 – 1 win over a good Moylough 79 side at Tarmon. In a real battle between two evenly matched sides the home side held out to take all three points.

Damien Boyle broke the deadlock after 35-minutes of play with his ninth league goal of the season. Evan Flynn added a second two minutes into the second-half for the Castleplunket side. Michael Mulligan pulled one back for Moylough with two minutes remaining but it came too late for the losers.

Title holders Boyle Celtic are a point behind leaders Castlerea Celtic but have played a game less. Celtic beat Ballaghaderreen 2–1 at Boyle.

Shane Battles gave Celtic a 1–0 half-time lead. Shairoze Akram levelled the game midway through the second-half. Michael Corrigan scored his seventh league goal of the season near the end to take all three points for Celtic.

Castlerea Celtic received the three points from their game against Skyvalley Rovers.

In Division 2; St Cuans /Ahascragh United continue to lead this Division following a hard earned 2–0 win over nearest challengers Rahara Rovers at Ahascragh.

The sides were level for until the last few minutes Nathan Horan and Liam O’Connor scored for St Cuans/Ahascragh United.

Glen Celtic are still very much in the Division 2 title race following a 2–0 win over Skyvalley Rovers at Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell.

In a close game Mac Dara Geraghty opened the scoring for the Glenamaddy side early on. The hosts missed a penalty, which proved costly. Ryan Mc Hugh made sure of the three points when he scored Glenamaddy second.

With league leaders Cam Celtic not playing the teams nearest had the chance of closing the gap.

Kilkerrin United share second place with Boyle following their home 4–0 win over Ballaghaderreen. Samantha Fahy scored three and a super header from Sarah Ward made up the winners total.

Boyle Celtic travelled to Castlerea Celtic winning 2–0. A mistake in the home defence after 25 minutes allowed the alert Katie Walsh score for Boyle Celtic.

15 minutes into the second-half good play by Aine Brennan on the left wing created a chance for Rachel Gormley who came within inches of levelling the game. Anna McGrath scored with a fine volley to give Boyle Celtic a 2-0 victory.

Colemanstown beat Ballinasloe Town 1-0 at Colemanstown. Rachel O’Brien scored the only goal of the game after 10 minutes.

Shiven Rovers were comfortable 6–1 winners over St Cuans Ahascragh United at Newbridge.

Ciara Collins scored in the second minute, Lucy Dunnican added two more and Rachel Farrell one before half-time. Giany Pricilla pulled one back for the losers before Sinead Flynn and Ciara Lally added two more for the winners.
