The hosts missed some goal chances but Diarmuid Murtagh kept the scoreboard ticking over as he consistently kept his nerve from dead ball situations.
Davy Burke’s side came out swinging in the second half, pressing the Monaghan side from kick outs and finding themselves level thanks to four points back to back.
The difference remained slim until Rory Beggan brought Monaghan level with just two minutes remaining.
A fisted point from Senan Lambe gave Roscommon the lead again late on, which they then added to with a two-pointer each for Conor Hand and Diarmuid Murtagh.
Conor McCarthy helped himself to a point of his own to put a slightly more flattering five points between the sides.
