Roscommon Gaels opened their senior football championship campaign with a 2-15 to 1-10 victory over Castlerea St. Kevin’s at O’Rourke Park.
The opening stages were evenly contested. The sides traded three points each inside the opening 17 minutes.
Gaels subsequently found another gear; Peter Gillooly made it a four-point game on 22 minutes.
Castlerea regained the upper hand by half-time. Niall Connaughton’s 28th minute goal helped them lead 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time.
Gaels started the second half impressively. Cian Connolly registered a goal 11 minutes after the restart, four minutes later Ryan Conlon made it a five-point game.
Gaels forward James Connolly added a second goal five minutes from time making it an eight-point game. Gaels held on to win by the same margin.
