Eoghan Carthy took a big step towards retaining the All-Ireland 60x30 title Last Saturday in St. Coman's.
Eoghan’s brother Rory won the title in 2019, beating Tipperary's Stephan Tobin in their Covid-delayed 2020 60x30 U14 All-Ireland semi-final.
Eoghan got straight into the groove in the first and displayed his full array of serves, volleys and kills from both hands to leave the Tipperary youngster chasing shadows for the entire game. The score of 15-3 was a fair reflection of the action.
Much credit must be given to Tobin in the second though, as he adapted his 40x20 style game and started causing Eoghan some real problems. The scores were very tight until Eoghan made what looked like a decisive break going 9-6 ahead.
However some poor concentration and shot selection gave the Tipp lad a number of soft aces and when Tobin led 12-10 a third game looked a distinct possibility. Showing a real ruthless streak, Eoghan upped the ante at the perfect time and produced some superb handball to finish off a tough second game 15-13.
The result means Roscommon have three representatives in the 2020 60x30 finals to be played in the coming two weeks. Eoghan will be joined by Carragh Kennedy and Siobhan Treacy in the Girls U16 & U17 grades respectively and all three are strong contenders.
