Roscommon are off to a winning start in Allianz football league division two following a 1-13 to 0-10 victory over Cork at Dr. Hyde Park.
The Rossies led 1-10 to 0-6 at the half-time break and held on for a convincing victory despite being outscored in the second half.
The sides traded three points each during the opening 12 minutes but a minute later, Roscommon were three points up after Enda Smith found the net.
Smith’s goal galvanised the hosts who stretched their lead to nine points on 28 minutes thanks to four points from Donie Smith along with a point each from Niall Kilroy and Cian McKeon.
Cork responded by hitting three of the next four scores leaving seven points between the teams at the half-time break.
A Donie Smith point on 54 minutes helped maintain Roscommon’s seven-point cushion before Anthony Cunningham’s men endured a 19-minute barren spell in front of the posts.
Cork failed to capitalise and Enda Smith ended Roscommon’s scoring drought one minute into injury time and sealed a seven-point victory.
