Jamie Malone's last-gasp point saw Roscommon suffer a heartbreaking defeat to Clare as the Banner men won 2-15 to 1-17 at Croke Park.
The Rossies were five points clear with four minutes remaining before a late resurgence saw Colm Collins' men win by the smallest of margins.
Roscommon moved two points clear inside five minutes when Diarmuid Murtagh found the net before Clare led by the same margin 13 minutes later thanks to Keelan Sexton’s goal.
The Rossies subsequently narrowed the gap to a single point on three occasions before Podge Collins restored Clare’s two-point cushion on 24 minutes.
Sexton stretched Clare’s lead to four points heading into first-half stoppage time before points from Diarmuid Murtagh and Niall Kilroy saw Roscommon trail 1-10 to 1-8 at half-time.
Sexton opened Clare’s second-half account within a minute of the restart before Roscommon landed six points in a row; all of which came from play.
Ronan Daly scored two points while Richard Hughes, Donie Smith, Ciaran Murtagh and Conor Daly added a point each as the Rossies moved three points clear with 14 minutes remaning.
Sexton narrowed the gap to two points on the hour mark but Roscommon responded with a hat-trick of points which resulted in a five-point buffer.
Sexton’s penalty goal initiated the Clare rally with less than 60 seconds remaining and he followed up with the equaliser two minutes into injury time.
Three minutes later, Malone broke Roscommon hearts by landing the winning score. Roscommon are now out of the championship and remain without a win in Croke Park since 1980.
