St. Brigid’s club notes week ending Sunday, June 20th 2021

Division 1 League: It was a good weekend for our first and second adult men’s teams who won their opening league games.

On Saturday evening, our first team faced Boyle in Kiltoom in the O’Rourke Cup, winning convincingly on a scoreline of 4-16 to 1-7.

Like Boyle, our first team were missing our county players, including our U-20 cohort, and we had to drew on some of our junior squad who had played the previous evening.

Despite it being their first competitive game in nine months, our players showed little sign of ring rust and built up a five point lead at the break, 2-6 to 1-4.

As our team went through the gears very quickly after the break, they served up some scintillating football, outscoring Boyle 2-10 to 0-3 in the second half to secure a comprehensive victory.

It was also impressive to see ten different players getting on the scoresheet and the game also showed a growing strength in depth in the squad.

A very solid team performance all round with Pearse Frost and Conor Gleeson the pick of the bunch over the hour or so.

It was also great to see Garvin Dolan back who capped off a good day’s work with a fine point.

Division 2 League: Our second team’s opening game in the O’Gara Cup on Friday evening last ended up being a much tighter affair.

Our lads looked to be cruising at the start of the second half, enjoying a six point lead with about ten minutes to go, 2-11 to 2-5.

However, Kilbride hit back with the last five points of the game before time ran out to ensure victory for our lads. The first half was nip and tuck where our lads led at the break by 1-7 to 1-4 .

Despite a dominant first 20 minutes in the second half, helped by a second St. Brigid’s goal from Gavin Byrne, the closing stages turned out to be frantic as we just got over the line to secure the points.

There were a number of good individual displays, especially from Gavin Murphy at midfield, John Cunningham in attack and Liam Egan in defence.

Division 5 League: Our third team play their second league game against Kilbride’s second team this Friday in Kiltoom at 8pm.
