LGFA Roscommon Senior Championship Semi-final
Match report: St Brigid’s v Kilbride
The championship journey ended for our Specsavers sponsored Senior Ladies when they bowed out at the semi-final stage against Kilbride today.
Kilbride started brightly and scored 1-1 without reply before Sarah O’Rourke evaded the Kilbride defence and threaded the ball between keeper and post to nestle in the back of the net and stir the St Brigid’s ladies to life. St Brigid’s kicked into gear and got their free-flowing attacks working to leave them up by 1:5(8) to 1:3(6) at the first water break.
The game evened out for the next quarter with Kilbride edging ahead by one point as the halftime whistle blew to leave St Brigid’s trailing by 1:6(9) to Kilbride’s 1:7(10).
Kilbride came out after halftime strongly and outscored the St Brigid’s ladies 7 points to 2 in the third quarter during which St Brigid’s were unlucky to see Katie McDonnell yellow carded for a last-ditch challenge which left her and the Kilbride attacker on the ground.
At the three-quarter mark, St. Brigid’s trailed 1:8 (11) to 2:11(17). St Brigid’s gave everything they had in the final quarter and cut into the Kilbride lead time and time again only for Kilbride to eke out another score to keep just out of touch.
At the final whistle, there was bitter disappointment for the St Brigid’s Ladies that they had failed to make it to the final, but for a team who only gained promotion this year, it has been a promising return to senior football.
St Brigid’s fielded a youthful defence today consisting of six under 19’s aided and guided by the experienced Shauna Francis and Karen O’Boyle.
Up front, Captain Aine O’Brien led by example and cajoled and encouraged her team as she has done so well all season long. In total nine of the first 15 ladies who started today play at under-19 level which shows the talent pipeline for St Brigid’s ladies is strong and they should be challenging for top honours in Roscommon for the foreseeable future. Final score. St. Brigid’s 1:14(17) Kilbride 3:13(22)
