The brilliant rays of sunshine today in Markievicz Park were no match for the beaming smiles of the hosts they enjoyed a six-point victory over Leitrim.
Sligo running out winners 2-16 to 2-10.
The game had a fiery start with a point from Leitrim’s Ryan O’Rourke being punished by a Sligo goal in the first two minutes. Patrick O’Connor added to his teammates' success by finding the net again a mere four minutes later.
Jack Heslin and Keith Beirne drove on Leitrim with a goal within two minutes of each other in the 10th and 12th minute. Sligo eventually getting their first point of the game.
On 24 minutes things took a nail biting turn when Conan Marren and Sean Carrabine levelled the game with quick succession points.
Referee Seamus Mulhare sent Leitrim player Keith Beirne to the side-lines with a straight red card.
Two yellow cards followed in extra time for the side’s Riordan O’Rourke and captain David Bruen. Sligo led by a point as the half came to a close. Leitrim 2-5 Sligo 2-6.
Sligo had moved three points clear on 57 minutes a three point difference between the teams became a steady fixture of the game.
This deficit carried on as and eventually stretched to become a six point lead as the full-time whistle blew in Sligo. Sligo finishing third in division four with Leitrim fourth.Sun Shines on Sligo
