Longford Town fell to a second defeat of the weekend as Wexford scored a 2-0 win in Ferrycarrig Park.
The victory see’s Wexford leap frog Athlone Town into fourth place. Longford Town are now eight points off Athlone Town and the play-offs with 12 points left to play for.
Wexford came close to opening the scoring on 22 minutes. Aaron Dobbs header sailing just wide.
The hosts took the lead on the half-hour. Luka Lovic heading a James Crawford corner home.
Town had a half-chance to equalise through Dylan Hand a minute before the break, but he Wexford defence stood firm. Wexford led 1-0 at half-time.
Wexford doubled their lead four minutes into the second-half. Former Town forward Aaron Dobbs shooting low into the net.
Mark Hanratty came close to making it three-nil, nine minutes before half-time. Hanratty beating two players before shooting over the bar.
Beineon O’Brien-Whitmarsh nearly had town on the scoreboard in the 90th minute. However, Wexford keeper Owen Mason produced a fine save to keep Longford out.
The result see’s Longford Town eight points off the play-off places with 12-points left to play for. Longford have failed to win in their last three games, including a draw with Kerry and defeat to Waterford.
Elsewhere, first division winners Galway United beat Finn Harps 1-0 thanks to a Stephen Walsh goal.
