Ireland to face winner of Portugal or Denmark

Ireland will face Armenia, Hungary and either Portugal or Demark in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Irish side have been drawn in a four team group taking place between September and November 2025. The group winner progresses to the World Cup with the second placed team entering the play-offs.

Heimir Hallgrimsson's will face the winners of the upcoming Nations League quarter-final between Denmark and Portugal. The winner will be the top seeds in the group.

“It’s a group that definitely the teams will take points from each other” explained Hallgrimsson.

“Looking at it, I don’t think there will be a run a way winner” added Hallgrimsson. “I think it’s kind of an equal group.”

Ireland last met Armenia in the 2022 Nations league campaign losing 1-0 in Yerevan and winning 3-2 in Dublin. Whereas, Ireland last played Hungary in June of this year, winning 2-1 in the Aviva stadium.
